Umphrey’s McGee has been defying genres for 20 years. Their music is like a conversation among old friends — they just start playing and let the music take them wherever it takes them.
Since starting out as a college band at Notre Dame, playing covers of Phish, moe., and the Grateful Dead, Umphrey’s McGee has experimented with rock, metal, funk, jazz, blues, reggae, electronic, bluegrass, and folk styles.
In January, the band released their 11th album, it’s not us, which covers musical stylings from prog rock to dance. “This is a statement album for Umphrey’s McGee,” says Joel Cummins. “The sound is as fresh as ever. The songs are strong as they’ve ever been. We’re always pushing forward.”
